Computers: Why it is important to create a boot disc for a computer

We all know about the evolution of the hard drives in the last decades, and that they increased in size from just a few megabytes to “just” a couple of terrabytes or more. There are a lot of peple keeping their archives of pictures, music or movies on such hard disks and any damage to them whould be a catastrophy. There are many reasons to causedisks to become unreadable: from the physical damage to the platans or the electronics, to software errors or boot record corruption.

The damage of the hard disk usually happen when you are dropping it to the ground or you hit it in one way or another, so try do not do that. They usually have some protection system against that, but they are still very sensitive to sudden moves or blunt force. Software error can be cause by viruses or maltion programs – or even user errors – that messes up your operating system and badly interacts with the way OS is reading/writing the drives.

Games: Zynga attempts to broaden reach with new gaming platform

If you spent at least a part of your online social media on Facebook you are already familiar with games as Farmville, CityVille, CastleVille, Words With Friends, Mafia Wars or Hidden Chronicles: you you haven’t played them already you must have got a lot of friend request to play these games. They were designed by Zinga, a company founded in 2007.

In the beginning of March 2012 Zynga announced a new gaming platform that is supposed to match up players who do not know one another but that have mutual interests in getting crops in. The goal was to make social gaming even easier for everyone. The new gaming platform was introduced in a trial version on Zynga.com during the month.

Computers: How to create a custom theme in Windows 7

As you already know from the previous versions of Windows, Windows 7 theme is only a collection of images (wallpapers) and screensaver, visual styles and some windows settings which gives a unique feel to your desktop. It’s a little more complex the the Windows XP theme or Windows Vista, for example, byt you still can change settings of some visual elements like Window border color, different windows sounds and create a new environment.

Before starting creating a Windows7 themepack, you should know that there are the typical elements of a Windows 7 themepack which you need to know. the following items in the list: Desktop icons, Desktop wallpapers, Windows Sounds, Windows screensaver, Mouse pointers, Theme color, Slideshow.

Windows 7 supports some new features including the Desktop Background Slide Show. A new file format, .themepack, has also been introduced with Windows 7 to help users share themes. Themes can be selected in the Personalization Control Panel only in Windows 7 Home Premium or higher or only on Windows Server 2008 R2 when the Desktop component is installed.

Technology: Difference between a disc and a disk

Disk and disc have very similar pronounciation, but they are very different: 2 alternative spelling for things that are generally thing and circular geometry. For the most part the words “disc” and “disk” can be used interchangeably to describe these flat, rounded objects. The terms and the objects appear in fields such as computers, media, science, anatomy and automotive mechanics. Some of these fields primarily use one spelling, others use both, depending on the specific object. In many fields the spellings can be used interchangeably, but generally in computer technology the word disk refers to the magnetic storage (hard disks, floppy disks or diskettes) while disc refers to optical storage (compact discs or CDs, digital versatile discs or DVDs).

In computers and media these 2 words refer to storage devices for data, music and videos. You can store all kind of files on them, but the difference in their structure give you different ways to write, organize and read the data from them.

Computers: What to consider when buying a computer monitor

When every one of us is buying a computer monitor there are some things to consider that will ansure we are purchasing a product that meet all our needs. You will won’t find any new analog Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitor, most of the are outdated as technology, and you will probably find some second or third hand CRT monitor if you search well enough. They have been replaces by the thinner and brighter Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) flat panel. The advantages of LCDs are visible: they consume less power, emit less radiation and take up less space.

The 3 main panel technologies currently used in LCDs are: vertical alignment (VA), twisted nematic (TN) and in-place switching (IPS). Samsung created a new panel tech in 2011 called Plane to Line-Switching (PLS). Monitor manufactures uses TN for making most of consumer monitors.

Web design tactics: How to make your website homepage usable and accessible

Before starting to enumare what are the factors that make a website good I should tell you that all succesful websites have 2 things in common: they are enjoyable (beautiful colors, great templates that make users to like or love them) and they are (in some degree) simple (the users don’t have to think hard how to browse the site and what are the meaning of every section on the page). The content is varies from one website to another – it’s what you put online – and it’s a completely different story.

As you already know, websites are powerful marketing tools in promoting any business. I’ve already said it a few times so far, I am not going to repeat it. But there are a few factors that improves the quality of your website: visual appealing, accesibility, user friendly and functionality. And it all starts from the homepage, the very first page most of the users usually land when visiting a new website they did not hear about before. If they find your website using the search engines and land on any of your posts, sooner or later they will get to your homepage, the root of your website.

This is why your first page is very important and it needs to be done in a manner to make it simple and very easy to use. Any of your visitors should understand quickly (most of) the structure of your website from your homepage.

Plan your website structure and homepage before you start creating them

When you are having a custom website you can ask for the web designer’s advice, his experience will help you decide the best way your first page should look. If you are getting a free CMS (there are a lot over the internet like joomla, wordpress, drupal and many others) you will have availabe some options about how your homepage should look, but it’s better to ask for advice in this case also.

Computers: Guide to the power options in Windows 7

You can consider that you don’t need to know about power management in Windows 7, but the next time you’ll use a laptop, notebook or another device that uses Microsoft Windows 7 you will find this very useful. It is said that Windows 7 is designed to help your battery last longer by running fewer background activities and the processor does not work as hard as previous versions of Windows and it draws less power.

Windows 7 power plan

The basic power plan managements screen shows you which plan (Balanced, Power saver, High performance) you are running. It also shows a warning if you are not currently using the most efficient setting. This popup appears when you click on the Windows battery icon, along with the information presented when the mouse is hovered over the battery icon. Using this screen you can Select a power plan between these 2 options: balanced tries to find the best way to combine performace and power, the Power saver gives you the most battery life. As you can easily understand, High performance is running your computer with about no power saver at all: Windows 7 will turn of your monitor after 15 minutes of no moving the mouse or hitting any keys, but your computer will never go into sleep mode or standby.

Remember it’s not an automatic select, you have to do it yourself every time you plug in and unplug your laptop if you want maximum efficiency.

Computers: How to manually add a printer to Windows 7

Depending of the location of the printer there are 2 methods to manually add a printer in to Window 7. There can be attached at least one printer to each computer and there can be created an entire network of computer using Window 7, so you can add a local printer or a network printer (attached to another computer or network device).

How to install local printer to Window 7

Click on the Start > Control Panel > (double click) Devices and Printers

Click on Add a Printer button in the menu

Select Add a local printer from the menu

Choose an existing LPT port and click on Next button.

Select the correct driver from the driver list menu for your printer (depending of its manufacturer and type). If there is no appropriate driver available click on the Windows Update button – that will trigger Windows 7 Update instalation. After it finishes search again for the driver.

Web design basics: How to make your website to be visually appealing

Web design basics: How to make your website to be visually appealing #1

It’s not a secret that most users judge websites by their appearance (first) and their content (second). It’s true that your content it’s the most important thing in getting new visitors, but the aspect of the website is the second main reason those visitors will return to read more. Allong with great content, getting your site (or sites if you have more than one) visually appealing will assure the flow the visitors, and in order to be appealing it has (they have) to be user friendly (the most important thing), navigable, attractive and organized.

There are some web designers or website owners that do not care about how their websites looks (not enough or not at all), they are interested mainly in designing and developing websited that function properly.

There are a few tips about how to make you website(s) to be visually appealing:

Web design tips: How to design effective and usable web forms

The first thing to consider when designing web forms is its utility: where on site you are going to use it and what is the meaning of the form. A log in or a signup web form is not the same with the form used for placing an online order for something or a service, they are very different in matter of content and their place inside a website.

You must keep in mind that users (especially first time users) love to play with the service (the website and what its content) instead filling long web form for an account they might never use in the future or for something they will never buy. So try to keep your user requirements minimal when filling any form. Let them explore your site, if you need from him lots and lots of data in order to make an order or to complete the user profile for a social media website or network break the data into several web form with the essential information only, on specific sections.

In order to have an effective and usable web form (any web form) you need 3 important things: the HTML tags of input elements encapsulated inside a <form> tag, a computer programming language to generate (if necessary) and to get and post the data and a SQL database to store the data.

Computers: What the windows startup folder does and how to use it

At startup Windows looks in some location for the programs to run, including the Startup folder – its reason is to automatically run some local programs after loading the operating system, when the system is ready for its user. It is used when an Windows user always opens the same programs immediately after starting his/her computer – the startup folder should make the life easier.

To open the Windows startup folder you must do the following steps: click the Start button, click All programs, right click the Startup folder and then click Open.

Computers: How to understand printing resolution

I’ve already written about understanding the screen resolution and its settings for windows and what the pixels mean. The measurement of monitor, scanner and digital imaging resolution is PPI, that means Pixels Per Inchi. The measurement of printed resolution is DPI, it means Dots Per Inch – the rule remains the same: the quality and the size of the printed medium depends of the number of the dots per inch. For the current every day usage and the draft printing there are used lower resolution settings as 150 or 300 DPI. High resolution settings start ar 600 DPI.

DPI is used instead PPI because the printers use tiny dots of ink to produce a printed image. As you easily can understand, a printer capable of 1200×1600 DPI can produce higher resolution than a printer that prints a file at 800×600 DPI.

Computers: Understanding Windows screen resolutions settings

Screen resolution (display resolution)

Screen resolution (or display resolution) refers to the size of the entire image displayed on your computer monitor. It refers to the number of individual picture elements (the pixels) that are displayed at once, on every single displayed image. Screen dimensions are the horizontal measurement followed by the vertical measurement – they are not resolution numbers, but merely something you can do with a tape measure. For example: a computer monitor display might be 14.75 inches wide and approximately 12 inches tall, that makes the diagonal measurement of 19 inches which gives you the screen size. A pixel is the smallest element on your computer screen and the quality and the detailes of an image increases with the number of the pixels. Having less pictures will make the displayed elements or/and image to look bigger, but there will be less space on your desktop for other windows or programs to run.

Computers: Mini, micro, nano and their development in computer technology

If you still don’t know about what mini, micro and nano are in matter of value you can look for them in the table at the end of this article. The are usually used to measure distance and weight, but not only that, and lately they became something very common for the computer technology even when the people using these terms did not understand their real meaning. Some speak about the processors having the distance between their transistors measured in nano or about micro devices and I wonder if they really understand what they are talking about.

Historical, the first computers were so big they only fit in entire rooms and there were allocated sections of buildings for storing them. They worked with card and it was not easy to translate the human language to the holes in the cards and back to something readable. The first PC (personal computers) had the size of the current laptops (or a little bigger), but the current smartphones have a better processing power than an entire network of old PC. The transition from that computers to the current laptops, tablets and other devices was made possible through the progess of technology that allows the miniaturization of the circuits.

Computers: The software included with the OpenOffice 3 suite

As the main concurent of Microsoft Office, OpenOffice.org 3 (or the OO3, as it is also known) is the leading open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more. It is available in many languages and works on all common computers, with different operating systems. It stores all your data in an international open standard format, it can also read and write files from other common office software packages. As the most important thing, besides its performance, Open Office can be downloaded and used completely free of charge for any purpose.

The entire OpenOffice.org suite is released under the terms of the GNU Lesser General Public Licence and it can be used across a variety of platforms including Linux, FreeBSD, Irix, Solaris and Microsoft Windows.

History

To better undstand the usage of the OO 3 you need some knowledge about its history, how the software was developed.

OpenOffice.org original name was StarOffice, an office suite developed by StarDivision in C++ and Java and acquired by Sun Microsystems in August 1999. Its source code was released in July 2000 with the aim of providing a free and open alternative to Microsoft Office. Oracle Corporation acquired Sun Microsystems in 2010 and stopped supporting commercial development, in June 2011 the company contribuited to suite to Apache Incubater to become a project of Apache Software Foundation. In December 2011 the foundation annouced that the project’s name would become Apache OpenOffice.

The components

The component from the Open Office suite are: writer, calc, impress, draw, base, math. Components that does not run separatly: basic, quickstarter, chart, gallery and media player, help.

Open Office Writer

Open Office Writer is a word processor similar with WordPerfect and Microsoft Word. It works as a basic WYSIWYG editor and can export the texts into various formats, besides its own: word documents, web pages, portable document format (pdf) files (including bookmarks). It provides a number of features not present in Word, including a word completion mechanism for predictive writing.

Other tools of Writer are: templates and stylesembedding or linking of graphics, spreadsheets, and other objects (from other components of the Open Office suite), built-in drawing toolschange tracking during revisions,page-layout methods, including frames, columns, and tables, master documents (to group a collection of documents into a single document), database integration (including a bibliography database), mail merge, equation editor (from the component OpenOffice.org Math), scriptable and remote controllable, indexingAutoCorrect and AutoComplete.

the internet: Tips on purchasing websites in 2012

It is well known that the domain names registration has became an industry and some people are making big money from registering or purchasing domain names, developing websites and/or selling or reseling them to others. Beside these people, the main reason of purchasing websites is the someone wants to develop a business or a network of sites and somebody else registered a desired domain name.

It does not matter the reason you are purchasing the website, always check the trends when you are decided to make the step. Even if you are already sure about the domain name you want, the TLD market is always changing, as long the people are pressuring the Internet authorities to release new TLDs. You can always find the free domain names on different TLDs if the primary domain name is already taken. I’ve head some time ago that there was taken a decision about registering the TLDs freely, as you want, but I’ll have to check it out (to update my information) and I’ll post another article about this story.

The second issue you must consider is the combination of time, energy and money you can or want to spend on developing the desired website. It may seems cheeper to register a free domain name and to develop the website later than purchasing an existing online website, but it’s not always so easy. The Internet is very competitive and developing a brand new site to the point it becomes a concurent to the existing ones can take more money, time and energy you thought it will take at the beginning.

the internet: Is it legal to use MP3 converters to convert YouTube videos

There are a lot of softwares and browser plugins that can download videos from youtube in different formats (mp3, mp4, flv, etc). The questions about the legality of the download and conversion of the videos is still being debating over the internet and usually the answers depends about if the downloaded content is copywriting or not. Some people says that it’s legal as long the video is not protected by the copyright laws.

By the other hand, when somebody uploads videos on youtube he/she has 2 options about the licence: standard youtube licence and Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed). The default licence set when uploading any video is the standard youtube licence, so when there is a different situation the owner of the video must select the CCA licence.

Gadgets: Prevent gizmo frustration, read the instructions

Do you know what RTFM mean? It’s an abbreviation of Read The Fucking Manual. It’s usually said or written in response to a question when a person being asked believes that the question can be easily answered by reading the instractions or user’s manual. That usually happen when people buy themselves a gizmo, go home and unpack it, then they start using it and soon after they are getting error messages or the device does not work properly (as they want or as it should work). The first impression is that the gizmo is deffective or they never got what they asked ar the store, but it usually that’s not it. The most common problems in first days of usage are triggered by the wrong usage of a device – any device (it works the same for computers, tablets, smartphones, washing machines or cars).

Usually data can be lost or deleted from your PC, gadget or removable area due any number of various reason. Beyon hardware error or malfunction, the most common data loss reason include human error, disk formats, improper device handling. It can make any user fell frustrated as inaccesible data usually brings wastage of time and energy (user’s energy), often it brings loss in business reputation and/or downtime and wastage of money.

There are a lot of data recovery software over the internet, a simple search with any search engines. I’ve listed a few programs that are in the top list.

Computers Computer basics What is an algorithm /Dan-Marius.ro – my slice of internet / Oradea, Bihor, Romania.

According to its defintions, in mathematics and computer science an algorithm is a set of rules for solving a problem in a finite number of steps as for finding the greatest common divisor. In other words, an algorithm is an effective method to get an initial state or an initial input, to compute that value (or values) through a step-by-step procedure to obtain a finite number of well defined states and, finally, to produce an output and terminating to get a final ending state.

From a mathematician’s point of view, an algorithm is a specific and logical procedure that has to be followed in order to solve a given math problem. An example of a very basic algorithm is multiplying two 5 digit numbers – try to do it yourself by hand, using a pencil, a piece of paper and the specific algorithm.

Computers What is the Turing test /Dan-Marius.ro – my slice of internet / Oradea, Bihor, Romania.

The Turing test was introduce by the English mathematician Alan Turing in 1950 and it’s a test of machine’s ability to exhibit intelligent behaviour. The 1950 paper called Computing Machinery and Inteligence opens withe words: “I propose to consider the question ‘Can machines think?’”. But “thinking” is difficult to define, Alan Turing chose to replace the question with another one, close related to the first, without ambiguousity: “Are there imaginable digital computer which would do well in the imitation game?”.

In Alan Turing’s original example, a human judge engages a natural language conversation with a human and a machine through a keyboard and a screen (the monitor of a computer). It means that the conversation is limited to only text-only channels. All participants are separated from one another, considered to be in different rooms. The humans behave as himself, but the machine is told to perform indistinguishable from a human being – if the jugde can not realiably tell the machine from the human it is said that the machine passed the test. Alan Turing proposed that, under these conditions, if a judge were less than 50% accurate he is likely to pick either human or computer, that computer is such simulation of a human being that he can be considered intelligent. The Turing test does not check the ability to give correct answers, it checks only how closely the given answers resemble human behaviour and typical human answers.
